Getting to Know

Jim Zuehlke

Q: What did you do prior to becoming a recruiter?

A:   I was in sales, marketing and management in technology companies for 15 years.

Q: What year (xx, xx, xxxx) did you become a recruiter?

A: I joined a local Minneapolis firm by the name of Brad, Martin and Associates in June of 1990.

Q: Why did you become a recruiter?

A.   One of the recruiters at the firm I joined was a college friend and said I would do well at recruiting. Also, I was not very happy working for a company but felt I could help companies hire people.

Q:  If you went out on your own as a recruiter what prompted that decision?

A:  The team I worked with at BMA was great but we all worked as independents and did not share assignments so I thought I could do it on my own anyway and build an organization for support.

Q:  Who were your role models and are you mentoring others now?

A:   The partners at BMA are pro's and I learned a great deal from them, especially how to only do retained work. I have mentored a number of people wanting to get into the business in the early years but only a few lately.

Q: If you were asked what your job title is, how would you respond?

A: I actually like the term Headhunter. My personal belief is that I am a guide to others not just for careers but for challenging peoples whose paths I am fortunate enough to come in contact with and have them ask and answer tough life questions. The search for the answers to those tough questions can be found in places where we often times don't expect to find them.

Q:  Is your primary job function sales driven or recruiting driven?

A:   That is difficult because I try not to over sell by saying president, I would probably say partner.

Q: Is your primary job function sales or recruiting driven?

A:  Sales driven even when I am recruiting

Q: Why did you join USRC and what prompts you to continue to be a member?

A:  I am a new member this year and I was prompted by my former colleagues at BMA to join and save some money. But in the last year I have benefited from the split recruiting arrangements and the newsletter information plus the variety of services.
